Seasonal influenza is an acute viral infection caused by the Influenza virus.

There are three types of seasonal influenza: A, B and C. Type A Influenza is classified into subtypes based on the different combinations of two proteins of the virus surface (H and N). Between the many subtypes of Type A Influenza, the subtypes A (H1N1) and A1 (H3N2), are circulating in the human body.

The annual attack rate of influenza globally is around 5-10% in adults, and 20-30% in children. The disease causes hospitalization and death, especially in high risk groups (very young children, the elderly, and chronically ill patients). These annual epidemies cause around 3 to 5 million serious cases of the disease and around 250,000 to 500,000 deaths around the world.
