• According to the World Health Organization, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of death worldwide. It is estimated that in 2012, an estimated 17.5 million people died from this cause, representing 31% of all deaths worldwide.
• It is estimated that by 2030, the number of deaths caused by CVD will reach 23.6 million.
• In Mexico, the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey (ENSANUT, 2012) reports a high prevalence of obesity, diabetes, arterial hypertension, and dyslipidemia; these cardiovascular risk factors (CVRF) tend to potentiate each other and are frequently associated, however, most of them are also modifiable or controllable.
• In Mexico, 19% of women and men between 30 and 69 years of age die of cardiovascular diseases, and it is estimated that 70.3% of the adult population lives with at least one cardiovascular risk factor.
• The ongoing discussion among various specialists related to heart and vascular diseases, including medical societies, civil organizations and patients, helps to ensure that the health burden does not increase disproportionately due to the leading cause of death in the world´s adult population, which has economic and social repercussions that affect Mexicans.
• The preventive approach is indispensable, given the increase in the number of people with cardiovascular diseases and their health consequences, which are becoming more frequent, to avoid a greater cost in terms of quality of life, death and health services to the population.
• Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in Mexico and the world.
• In our country, more than 150,000 people die each year, mainly from acute myocardial infarction.
• It is considered that the COVID-19 pandemic, like others of infectious natures, will eventually pass, but the pandemic associated with arteriosclerosis and cardiovascular disease will remain.
• Los infartos al miocardio y los accidentes cerebrovasculares cobran más de 17 millones de vidas al año, y se estima que esta cantidad ascenderá a 23.6 millones para el 2030, -Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS).
• In Mexico there is an accumulation of risk factors such as diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure, sedentary lifestyle and high cholesterol. “All of them are increasing because there is little or very limited prevention
• WHO aims to convince people around the world that positive change and caring for our own and our loved ones´ hearts can be achieved with a commitment to our health.
It is imperative to know the cardiovascular risk factors. They are classified in a simple way as: Non-modifiable, such as age and ethnic group, and modifiable, which are those that can be influenced to reduce the possibility of a disease or its complication. Examples of the latter are: arterial hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension and obesity, overweight metabolic syndrome (diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, hypertension and obesity in the same subject) and smoking, to which can be added sedentary lifestyle or low physical activity.
Attention to modifiable risk factors through higienic dietary habits such as a healthy diet, physical activity or exercise, maintenance of a healthy weight, pharmacological correction ot hypertension and dyslipidemia, as well as strict control of diabetes, is the cornerstone of long-term prevention of cardiovascular catastrophes.
It has been shown in several studies that disease prevention through the control of CVRFs significantly reduces morbidity and mortality.
Thus, the visit to the physician, regardless of the reason for consultation, should include an evaluation of these factors in the adult population. CV diseases affect younger and younger subjects, so early intervention is vital, literally, in each patient´s years to come.
